Day Out: Railway Museum
Hi there!
Since Sophie has shown more interest in trains and becoming choo, choo mad. We thought it would be a great idea to take her to the Railway Museum in York.
Starting the Day
We got up, got ready and had our breakfast, just as we would any other weekend. We tend to take it easy and let Sophie play a little before we do end up heading out of the door. This means that we don’t actually end up leaving the house until around 10/11am.
This morning, we were nicely awake before Sophie. We took FULL advantage by having our breakfast before she woke.
We headed out around 10am.
Railway Museum
We headed to the Park & Ride and then caught the bus into town. From there it is a bit of a walk to the museum. The museum itself is free to enter, which is great for anyone after a cheap day out.
This is a great place to visit as there are lots of different trains. Each train has a little board that has a summary of information about the train.

We saw the first few trains and then got ourselves something to eat. Thankfully, Leonard made Sophie a sandwich that we gave her there. The sandwiches that we got and a coffee each, wasn’t cheap. Also, there didn’t seem to be much choice for those who don’t eat meat.
Once we ate and had a drink, we continued to make our way around the museum. Sophie loved being able to walk around and look at the trains. She was so taken in by the model train that was going around the model set. I think we could have just stayed there for hours and she would have been happy.
After about an hour and half, Sophie was ready to be back in her pram, although she wasn’t overly happy about it. She was still able to look at the trains.
We went through to the other part of it and I’m glad she was in the pram as they had more items that were stacked on stillages.
We also went up to the viewing platform, which was unfortunately closed. We were still able to see trains pull in and out of the station. This was because there was a glass door and windows to the side to still allow you to see.
York
We then left and walked back into York. We nipped into Costa, mainly for Sophie to have something to eat for her dinner. We also got to enjoy a nice cold drink too.
We then continued to have a little wonder around before heading to Boots to collect my parcel.
By that point, we were ready to head home, so we headed to where the bus would then pick us up and take us back to the park & ride.
Overall
We had a fantastic day out. I’m not too bothered about trains, but I still found it interesting. It was lovely to see Sophie so taken in by something too.
We’re definitely planning on going back and probably will do while Sophie has an interest in it.
Have you visited the Railway Musuem? What did you think of it?
